Katie on the High Wire at Cornwall Circus Camp

Katie just got back from the first Cornwall Circus Camp run by Swamp Circus. She had a brilliant time camping on Chyan farm and teaching silks to beginner and advanced students over the five day training camp.

As well as teaching aerial dance on silks, Katie joined in with the other classes on offer including high wire, swinging trapeze, tightrope, tumbling, handstands and yoga. She performed some tightrope on Saturday night in the camp cabaret, but the high wire was much more terrifying than anyone who did it predicted! Being up high in the wind made it very scary to let go of the safety lines with both hands, but it was lots of fun and a great challenge.

Highlights for Katie included the massage yoga class led by Stephanie Jackson where sore and tired campers got to massage and manipulate each other to loosen up and relax on Friday night.

The swinging trapeze taught by Lucy Francis was exhilarating. Lucy used to teach Katie’s sister, Maddy, who is a professional swinging and static trapeze artist, so Katie’s little brothers decided to have a go too.

The most energetic afternoon was when the inflatable tumble track came out and the whole camp took part in the tumbling workshop. As an ex-gymnast, Katie was able to try out some of the tricks she no longer does on the floor since becoming an aerialist.

A really useful workshop was DuoSu‘s “handstand besting”, where Rachel and Richard led conditioning and technique exercises which left everyone wobbly on the last afternoon of camp. Lots of tips and exercises to take away and work on!
