Summer Sky Ribbons at The Bentall Centre

The final weekend of the International Youth Arts Festival 2013 saw Starfiz performing an aerial act in The Bentall Centre, Kingston for Circus Suburbia. Creative Youth, the charity which runs the month long arts festival, commissioned a collaboration between Circus Suburbia (of which Katie is director) and fellow Creative Talent company, EDDance.

The brief was to respond to the shopping centre’s architecture and to create a piece to celebrate the height of summer. Together Edd and Katie designed a piece about synchronised swimming, with three aerialists interacting with ground-based dancers. The characters led to some beautiful, fluid and sometimes comical movements as we swam through the air and danced in a light-hearted show for families and shoppers.

The blue and green centre colours were used in the silks, costumes and hula hoops used as props by the ground-based dancers. The use of three floors in the centre created a stunning spectacle which gripped shoppers and drew a huge crowd to the balconies.

We are excited about this new collaboration and can’t wait to work with EDDance again, and to take on new commissions for Creative Youth.

Justin Howard filmed the on-site rehearsal, and you can watch a teaser video on youtube of our aerial dance.

The local paper, The Surrey Comet, wrote an article about our Summer Sky Ribbons performances.
